Set up in 1924, the organisation started life as Derbyshire Rural Community Council (DRCC).  We became incorporated as a Registered Company, Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity in England in 1997.

DRCC became RAD in 2010. As a rural community council, the name confused many who believed we were part of county or local authority councils. As a charity and a lead partner in the county's voluntary sector, the name change to Rural Action Derbyshire seemed like the right move.

Back in 1924, the major piece of work was supporting rural communities get an electricity supply connected throughout the county. And we still are helping communities get connected, but these days it is Broadband connectivity, rather than electricity.

How have we changed?

It is RAD's ability to adapt to the needs of the people and communities we support that has helped us remain at the forefront of the voluntary sector in Derbyshire. Funding has become an increasing challenge for charities and non-profit organisations to overcome. We are in a strong position with an enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff and trustees and their hard work keeps the organisation moving forward.

We are looking forward to being 100 years old in 2024!
